Ordering infinite utility streams comes at the cost of a non-Ramsey set

چکیده

The existence of a Paretian and finitely anonymous ordering in the set of infinite utility streams implies the existence of a non-Ramsey set (a nonconstructive object whose existence requires the axiom of choice). Therefore, each Paretian and finitely anonymous quasi-ordering either is incomplete or does not have an explicit description. Hence, the possibility results of Svensson (1980) and of Bossert, Sprumont, and Suzumura (2006) do require the axiom of choice. JEL classification: D60; D70; D90

Combining monotonicity and strong equity: construction and representation of orders on infinite utility streams

This paper studies the nature of social welfare orders on infinite utility streams, satisfying the efficiency principle known asMonotonicity and the consequentialist equity principle known as Strong Equity. It provides a complete characterization of domain sets for which there exists such a social welfare order which is in addition representable by a real valued function. It then shows that for...

Developing EPQ models for non-instantaneous deteriorating items

In this paper, the classical economic production quantity (EPQ) model is developed for non-instantaneous deteriorating items by considering a relationship between the holding cost and the ordering cycle length. Two models are developed. First, the proposed model is considered when backorders are not permitted and this condition is waived for the second case. The cost functions associated with t...

Ordering infinite utility streams

We reconsider the problem of ordering infinite utility streams. As has been established in earlier contributions, if no representability condition is imposed, there exist strongly Paretian and finitely anonymous orderings of intertemporal utility streams. We examine the possibility of adding suitably formulated versions of classical equity conditions. First, we provide a characterization of all ...

On the Possibility of Continuous, Paretian and Egalitarian Evaluation of Infinite Utility Streams∗

There exists a utilitarian tradition à la Sidgwick of treating equal generations equally in the form of anonymity. Diamond showed that no social evaluation ordering over infinite utility streams satisfying the Pareto principle, Sidgwick’s equity principle, and the axiom of continuity exists. We introduce two versions of egalitarianism in the spirit of the Pigou-Dalton transfer principle and the...

Ramsey Properties of Countably Infinite Partial Orderings

A partial ordering P is chain-Ramsey if, for every natural number n and every coloring of the n-element chains from P in finitely many colors, there is a monochromatic subordering Q isomorphic to P. Chain-Ramsey partial orderings stratify naturally into levels. We show that a countably infinite partial ordering with finite levels is chain-Ramsey if and only if it is biembeddable with one of a c...
